History

The Brunei Empire achieved its height during between the 15 and 17th centuries. European influence resulted in the decline of the empire. Brunei was part of the British sphere of influence, and in 1881 it became a British protectorate. The discovery of oil in Brunei insured the fact that the colony became very wealthy. In 1984 Brunei was granted independence from Great Britain.
