SR-71 Blackbird Transatlantic Speed Record

On September 1, 1974, a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird set a transatlantic speed record, flying from New York to London in roughly one hour and fifty-five minutes. The flight averaged well over 1,800 miles per hour and remains an unmatched mark for the New York to London route by a manned aircraft.

The SR-71 was a strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed's famed Skunk Works. Built largely of titanium to withstand the searing heat of sustained flight above Mach 3, the Blackbird cruised at extreme altitude and speed, allowing it to overfly hostile territory and outrun any threat sent against it.

The record run, supported by aerial refueling, was as much a public demonstration as a technical feat, dramatizing just how far the Blackbird outpaced ordinary aviation. Decades after the type was retired, its speed and altitude achievements still stand among the most remarkable in the history of powered flight.
