F-106 Delta Dart World Speed Record
On December 15, 1959, the United States Air Force set a new world absolute speed record using the Convair F-106 Delta Dart. Piloted by Major Joseph W. Rogers, the delta-winged interceptor reached a speed of roughly 1,525 miles per hour, about Mach 2.3, flying over a measured high-altitude course.
The F-106 was the Air Force's frontline all-weather interceptor, built to defend North American airspace against Soviet bombers during the Cold War. The record attempt was notable for being flown with a production-standard aircraft, underscoring the genuine high-speed performance built into the operational fighter rather than a one-off experimental machine.
The achievement stood as a leading benchmark for single-engine turbojet aircraft and reinforced American confidence in its air defense technology. It remained a celebrated milestone in the history of the Air Force's interceptor force for many years afterward.
