F-106 Delta Dart World Speed Record

On December 15, 1959, the United States Air Force set a new world absolute speed record with the Convair F-106 Delta Dart. The delta-winged interceptor, flown by Major Joseph W. Rogers, reached a speed of about 1,525 miles per hour, roughly Mach 2.3, over a measured course at high altitude.

The F-106 was the Air Force's premier all-weather interceptor of the period, designed to defend North America against Soviet bombers as part of the continental air defense system. Its sophisticated fire-control system and high performance made it well suited to the record attempt, which was flown by a standard production-type aircraft rather than a specially modified machine.

The mark stood as a notable benchmark for single-engine, turbojet-powered aircraft and demonstrated the maturity of American interceptor design at the height of the Cold War. The record-setting flight earned Rogers recognition and remained a point of pride for the Air Force for many years.
