With the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, President Nixon selected Congressman Gerald Ford to be his new vice president. Ford's appointment marked the first time that a vice president came to office without standing for election.
Gerald Ford was a popular Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. When Vice President Agnew was forced to resign due to being accused of accepting bribes when he was governor. President Nixon invoked the 25th amendment on October 12, 1973 to nominate Ford to replace him. The US Senate voted 92 to 3 to confirm him on November 27th. On December 6 th the House of Representatives voted 387 to 35. An hour later he was sworn in as Vice President.
