Slovaks, a West Slavic people closely related to Czechs, form the majority, with a significant Hungarian minority in the south and a Roma minority. Slovak is the official language.

Slovakia is more religious than the neighboring Czech Republic, with Roman Catholicism dominant and Protestant and Greek Catholic minorities.

Slovakia has high literacy and rising living standards, but an aging population and emigration of workers westward present long-term challenges.
