The operation was planned to remove the Taliban from the Shahi-Kot Valley and surrounding mountains. it was the first use of regular American ground forces as opposed to special forces . 1,700 US troops and 1,000 Afghanistan troops entered the Valley with 500 to 1000 Taliban opposing them. The battle lasted for 12 days and the American military described it as an unqualified success. Its not clear how successful the battle really was.
