A Further Surge

President Obama had announced at the end of 2009 an additional surge in troops to Afghanistan. By the end of March, an additional 30,000 troops were in place. A further 18,000 arrived by June. Included in the surge was the 101st Airborne Division. The surge which also included additional special forces and CIA units managed to kill more Taliban soldiers and their leaders but to had no significant long-term impact.
