Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

On July 16, 1935 the city of Phoenix bought Sky Harbor Airport, which consisted of 285 acres of land and a few buildings, from the Acrne Investment Company. At that time Sky Harbor was an isolated and rural airfield known as The Farm". Its emergence as one of the nation's major passenger airports began on October 13, 1952 with the dedication of a modern, convenient and efficient passenger terminal called Terminal 1. Sky Harbor grew from 296,066 passengers to 920,096 in 1961 which prompted the opening of terminal 2 in 1962, the year Sky Harbor broke the million passenger mark. In the lobby of Terminal 2 a three-panel mosaic mural, known as "The Phoenix" was painted by Paul Coze and has become a Phoenix landmark.
