New Zealand had always been loyal to the British empire. It contributed to the upkeep of the British Pacific Squadron. In 1907 New Zealand was granted dominion status within the Empire.

New Zealand's relationship with Britain dates back to its colonization in the early 19th century. The British government officially claimed sovereignty over New Zealand in 1840 through the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which established a formal partnership between the British Crown and the indigenous Māori people. As a British colony, New Zealand was subject to British law and governance, and its inhabitants, both European settlers and Māori, became subjects of the British Empire.

As a result of its unwavering loyalty and contributions to the British Empire, New Zealand was granted dominion status in 1907. Dominion status was a significant milestone in New Zealand's political development, as it marked a shift from being a British colony to becoming a self-governing nation within the British Empire.

Under dominion status, New Zealand was granted a greater degree of autonomy and self-determination. It gained control over its domestic affairs, while still maintaining its allegiance to the British Crown and participating in the affairs of the British Empire. This new status was an acknowledgment of New Zealand's growing political maturity and its continued loyalty to Britain.

The Significance of Dominion Status

The attainment of dominion status was a turning point in New Zealand's history. It represented a major step towards nationhood and self-governance, paving the way for the development of a distinct national identity and the eventual journey towards full independence.

Dominion status also allowed New Zealand to forge its path in international affairs, while still maintaining strong ties with Britain. This relationship enabled New Zealand to benefit from British support in times of need, such as during the world wars, while also allowing it to pursue its interests and develop its economy and infrastructure.
