Gaspe incident (1772) - The Gaspe, a British warship, was patrolling Narragansett Bay, near Providence, Rhode Island, enforcing customs laws and harassing local residents. When the ship ran aground one night, residents of Providence burned it. Since it was unlikely that the Rhode Island officials would take any action, the British government appointed a special commission to investigate the incident. No Rhode Islanders, however, were willing to testify against the offenders, so the investigation failed. This incident, along with other clashes, increased British-colonial tensions in the years preceding the Battles of Lexington and Concord (1775).
Green Mountain Boys - This was a volunteer regiment from Vermont, which Ethan Allen (1738-1789) led at Fort Ticonderoga, successfully taking the fort from the British.
