As men went to war; the business of running the home, providing for the family, and filling the demand for labor was increasingly left to the women of the households. Women across the country ran family farms and other businesses. They began working outside the home in larger numbers, as well; especially in factories and hospitals, and on farms. Their work in nursing and, to a lesser extent, manufacturing, represented significant contributions to the war efforts on both sides.
