Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres Spain. He was a Surrealist painter Salvador Dali was known for his controversial work that tried to capture impressions of the subconscious mind. Images as disconcerting as melting watches and peculiar landscapes were to be found in the Spanish-born painter's work. He spent the years of World War II in the United States. There he worked in various media; including film, theatre, and ballet, in addition to painting.

Upon his return to Spain in 1949, Dali reconciled with the Catholic Church, from which he had been estranged. Dali went out of his way to cultivate a dramatic public persona, with his elaborately waxed mustache and outrageous self-publicity.
