Pearl Bailey was born in Newport News Virginia on March 29, 1918. Her career began with a talent contest win at the age of 15 and continued with performances in cabarets, films, and stage. During World War II she performed for USO. Her most well-known role was in Hello Dolly. She won a Tony in 1968 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988.
