Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg Illinois, on January 6, 1878. Sandburg began his writing career working for newspapers, which he continued to pursue even after beginning to publish poetry in 1904. By 1916, his reputation was assured with the publication of "Chicago Poems" in Chicago's prestigious Poetry magazine. His next effort, Cornhuskers garnered a Pulitzer Prize in 1918. By the late 1920's, Sandburg had left newspaper work.

He won an additional Pulitzer for Complete Poems, published in 1950 and revised in 1970. In addition, Sandburg wrote a six-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln, a novel, folk songs, children's stories and an autobiography.
