Legendary film director Sir Alfred Hitchcock was born on August 13 1899 in Leyonstone England. His mastery of screen suspense stands alone in the history of the cinema. He also made the first "talking picture" in England in 1929. His films, such as The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935), Rebecca (1940), Strangers on a Train (1951), Vertigo (1958) and Psycho (1960), among many others, enthralled and terrified moviegoers the world over.

Hitchcock also produced a weekly television program in the 1950's and 1960's. Although nominated five times, Hitchcock never won an Academy Award. Nevertheless, Hitchcock remains the yardstick against which all directors in the suspense genre are measured.
